K-9 Units

"K-9's to Take a Bite Out of Crime"

The Lawton Police Department currently has a total of six K-9's.   Captain Shaw and Lt. Robert Edmonson supervise the K-9 patrol section. Three of the K-9's are assigned to patrol, one is assigned to the Gang Task Force and two are assigned to the special operations section.

K-9's in Patrol

• Master Officer Russell LaFrance is assigned as handler for K-9 "Rico."
• Master Officer Charlie Martin is assigned K-9 "Diego."
• Officer Kevin Schulte is assigned K-9 "Speedy."
• Master Officer Brian Shotts has K-9 "Rex."  (Gang Task Force)

So far, the K-9s have been used to track down dangerous suspects that had attempted to flee from crime scenes and sniff search vehicles and buildings for hidden narcotics.

Special Operations K-9's

·         Investigator Schucker has K-9 "Major"

·         Investigator Geer is assigned  K-9 "Dee."

All six dogs have proven to be great assets to the police department. Many suspects have been apprehended, evidence has been located and thousands of dollars worth of narcotics have been removed from the streets.
